Finding Your Focus When Everything Else is Shifting

Hey….Faith-Filled Leaders! It’s been a while, and my lost blog mentioned going back to the basics. Let’s stay there for a moment. Okay?

Now, leaders, the world around us doesn’t exactly stand still while we try to create or build.

Lately, it feels like the landscape is constantly shifting. Algorithms updates alter how we share our work overnight, industry trends evolve faster than we can track them, and the day-to-day chaos of regular life never quite hits a pause button. When everything is changing around you, trying to plant your feet and stay productive can feel like trying to build a house in the middle of a hurricane.

So, as leaders, how do we keep moving forward when the ground beneath us keeps shifting? How do we keep moving forward when relationships seem fickle? How do you move forward?

Chilllld, we return to the basics. We return to a basic principle that never fails, no matter what changes outside our window: Work. Play. Back to work.

The Basic Principle

When change causes the big picture to get too chaotic, successful leaders can shrink their world down to three simple steps. As it is written, “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways” (Proverbs 4:25-26).

This is how we stay steady when the ground shifts:

  • Work (The Foundation): This is where you put the blinders on. The world might be changing, people might be changing, but your core mission isn’t. Show up, block out the external noise, and put your thoughts onto the page. Focus on what you can control—your effort, your words, and your output. Leave the rest alone!
  • Play (The Release): You cannot pour from an empty cup, especially when dealing with the stress of external changes that can start to impact your internal system. Step away from the laptop. Go for a walk, read something entirely unrelated to your field, or just laugh with those who love you back. Taking time to have fun isn’t slacking off; it’s the reset button your brain desperately needs to process the shifting world around it.
  • Back to Work (The Commitment): The most critical step. Once you’ve recharged, you bring that fresh energy back to the desk. You don’t let the “play” turn into procrastination. You sit back down, take a deep breath, and dive right back into the grind with renewed clarity.

So, child, are you ready to get back focused? What are your next steps?

Let’s talk about it in the comments below!
